The aim of this paper is to examine the history, current situation and possible directions of the Hungarian scientific discourse, by combining the perspectives of special education and Disability Studies in a selfcritical
and self-reflective way. Without the pretense of completeness, it revives typical scientific questions that arose at conferences and in articles during the first encounters of the two disciplines in Hungary. It also presents a previously unpublished internal commentary, which was written in 2016 as a response to the draft version of the Disability Studies master’s programme. As a conclusion, the paper makes a bold thought experiment on the possible synthesis of the two academic fields, thereby encouraging further theoretical discussions.
