This article serves as a think piece and provides an overview of diversity, equity and inclusion (referred to later as DEI) and their significance within the governance of higher education institutions. The objective is to investigate various perspectives on mainstreaming DEI principles in higher education governance. Drawing on the diversity, equity and inclusion Model Process (Rae, 2022), the article underscores notable milestones in the development of the CHallenge-Driven, Accessible, Research-based and Mobile European University (referred to as CHARM-EU) which was created in January 2019 and co-funded by the Erasmus+ program. The findings presented in this article act as food for thought for the readers.
